How does it work?
Once you have your semen sample, it is a simple matter of placing a droplet on the microscope, turning on the LED light, and looking through the eyepiece. At that point you will see swimming sperm.
What are you looking for?
You are looking for healthy sperm. Most people can tell if an animal is healthy by the way it looks and moves, and microscopic sperm are not much different.
There are three basic things to look for:
- Sperm count: Are there enough of them and are they alive?
- Sperm morphology: Are they deformed or are they athletic looking?
- Sperm motility: Do they swim in circles or are they making progress?
It is usually pretty obvious if a sperm is ready for a long swim or not.
